Low MOQ Clothing Manufacturing: How to Plan Your First Order

MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is the smallest order a factory will accept for a style. For new brands, it's often the biggest barrier to getting started. Here's how MOQs work and how to plan a first order that fits your budget.
What is MOQ?
MOQ is the fewest pieces a manufacturer will produce in one order. It can be set per style, per colour, per fabric, or per order, so always ask how a factory counts it. A minimum of 100 pieces "per style per colour" is very different from 100 pieces "per order".
Why do manufacturers set MOQs?
- Setup time: making patterns, cutting markers, screens and embroidery files takes the same effort for 50 pieces as for 5,000.
- Fabric minimums: mills often sell fabric, rib and custom-dyed colours by minimum length or weight.
- Efficiency: production lines run best when they make enough of one item to justify the changeover.
Large factories often require hundreds or thousands of pieces per style. Smaller, flexible manufacturers can go much lower, which is what most new streetwear brands need.
How to keep your MOQ low
- Limit colourways: one or two colours per style keeps you within minimums.
- Use stock fabric colours: custom-dyed fabric usually has higher minimums than colours the factory already stocks.
- Share fabric across styles: a hoodie and sweatpant in the same fleece and colour can share fabric and make a matching set.
- Keep decoration consistent: the same print or embroidery across items reduces setup.
- Start with core sizes: plan your size curve around what your audience actually buys.
Plan your size breakdown
Spread your quantity across sizes based on your customers, not evenly. A common starting point for streetwear is to weight the middle sizes most heavily, for example more M and L than S and XL, then adjust using your own sales data after the first drop. Check your audience: oversized fits can shift demand towards smaller sizes, because customers size down.
Budgeting your first order
When you compare quotes, add up the full cost, not just the unit price:
- Unit price (fabric, cut and sew, decoration).
- Sampling costs.
- Labels, tags and packaging.
- Shipping and duties. DDP shipping includes duties, which makes the landed cost easier to calculate.
A slightly higher unit price at a low MOQ is often smarter than a cheap unit price that forces you to buy far more stock than you can sell. Unsold inventory is the most expensive thing in fashion.
Low MOQ doesn't have to mean low quality
A good small-batch manufacturer uses the same fabrics, prints and finishing on 50 pieces as on 5,000. Ask to see production photos and approve a sample before bulk. Our manufacturer checklist covers what to ask.
Grow your order with demand
Start small, sell through, and reorder what works. As your volumes increase, unit costs typically come down and you can add custom fabrics, new colourways and more complex finishes. If you're just getting started, our guide to starting a streetwear brand covers the full journey.

Frequently asked questions
What does MOQ mean in clothing manufacturing?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity: the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will produce in one order. It may be counted per style, per colour or per order.
Why do clothing manufacturers have MOQs?
Every style needs setup work such as patterns, cutting, screens and fabric sourcing. MOQs make sure an order covers that setup cost and fabric minimums.
How can I lower my MOQ?
Limit colourways, use stock fabric colours, share fabric across styles, and keep decoration consistent. A manufacturer with flexible MOQs will also help you plan quantities.
Is a low MOQ manufacturer more expensive?
Unit prices are often a little higher on small runs, but you avoid tying cash up in stock you can't sell. For new brands, that usually makes low MOQ the cheaper option overall.
