How to Choose a Private Label Clothing Manufacturer: 12 Questions to Ask

Picking a manufacturer is the biggest decision you'll make for your clothing brand. The right partner makes your designs better, protects your margins and grows with you. The wrong one costs you money, time and customers. Here are the questions to ask before you place an order.
Private label vs white label: a quick definition
Private label means the manufacturer produces garments to your specs and puts your branding on them. White label usually means taking an existing blank or base style and adding your branding. Many streetwear brands start with white-label blanks and move to fully custom private-label pieces as they grow. A flexible manufacturer can handle both.
12 questions to ask a clothing manufacturer
1. Do you specialise in streetwear?
Streetwear has its own language: oversized and boxy fits, heavyweight fleece, acid washes, puff print, rhinestones. A factory that makes these every day will understand your references and get closer on the first sample.
2. What is your MOQ per style and per colour?
Minimum order quantity is often the deciding factor for new brands. Ask whether the MOQ is per style, per colour, or per size run, and whether it changes with fabric or decoration. More on this in our low MOQ guide.
3. How does sampling work?
Ask about sample cost, how long samples take, how many revision rounds are typical, and whether the sample cost is credited against bulk orders.
4. What's done in-house vs outsourced?
When cutting, sewing, printing, embroidery, washing and finishing happen under one roof, there are fewer handoffs, fewer delays and better quality control. If steps are outsourced, ask how they're managed.
5. What are your lead times?
Get separate timelines for sampling and bulk production, and ask what can slow them down, such as custom fabric, custom dyeing or specialty finishes.
6. Can I see examples of your work?
Ask for photos or videos of real production, ideally for styles similar to yours. Look closely at stitching, print quality and finishing. A manufacturer proud of its work will happily show it.
7. How do you handle quality control?
Ask when checks happen (during production, before packing) and what happens if pieces don't match the approved sample.
8. Can you help with tech packs and development?
If you're new, a factory that can help you spec garments from sketches and references will save you time. See what a tech pack includes.
9. Do you make custom labels, tags and packaging?
Woven labels, neck prints, hang tags and branded packaging turn a garment into your product. Ask what's available and what the minimums are.
10. How do you ship, and who handles duties?
Ask about shipping methods and terms. With DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), the manufacturer arranges delivery to your door with duties and import taxes included, so there are no surprise charges at customs. With other terms, you may need to pay duties or arrange clearance yourself.
11. What payment methods and terms do you accept?
Ask about deposits, balance timing and accepted methods. Clear, documented terms protect both sides.
12. Who will be my point of contact?
Fast, clear communication matters as much as production quality. Ask who handles your order and how they prefer to communicate, whether that's WhatsApp, email or calls.
Red flags to watch for
- Unwilling to make a sample before bulk.
- No photos of real production.
- Vague answers on MOQ, lead time or pricing.
- Pressure to pay in full upfront before a sample is approved.
- Slow or inconsistent communication before you've even ordered.
Start with a sample order
The best test of a manufacturer is a sample. It shows you their quality, communication and timelines before you commit to bulk. Treat it as an interview for a long-term partner.

Frequently asked questions
What is a private label clothing manufacturer?
A private label clothing manufacturer produces garments to your designs and specifications and brands them with your labels, tags and packaging, so the product is sold as your brand.
What is the difference between private label and white label clothing?
Private label is made to your custom specs. White label usually means an existing base garment that is branded with your logo. Many brands start with white label and move to private label.
What does DDP shipping mean?
DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid. The seller arranges delivery to your address and covers duties and import taxes, so you don't have to clear customs or pay charges on arrival.
Should I order a sample before bulk production?
Yes. A sample lets you check fit, fabric, print and labels and judge the manufacturer's quality and communication before you commit to a full order.
